A little history…The road and surrounding areas were once a larger parcel divided into smaller lots to accommodate the fast-growing seagoing population changing the landscape from agriculture in nature to the present day nautical and Naval home we all know and love. This land was owned by Walter Clarke, the son of one of Newport’s founding fathers, Jeremiah Clarke. The location changed hands a few times but ended in the ownership of Newport Gardner (a freed slave) and was the meeting place of the Union Congregational Church; the first free African American church in Newport.
